The Grimsby exit, the opening-day loss to Arsenal, and the derby debacle have compressed the timeline. Supporters can see flashes – Šeško’s movement, Mbeumo’s directness, De Ligt’s authority, glimmers from Bruno Fernandes – but we need a coherent, authoritative 90 minutes. Backing Mainoo alongside Ugarte would be seen as a step toward balance, pairing youth and calm distribution with tenacity and aggression.
Selection calls now carry weight: stick or twist with Bayindir, trust Lammens, and decide whether to throw Cunha straight back in. A convincing performance here doesn’t end the questions, but it would buy the beleaguered Portugese time.
United’s Approach
With Mainoo and Ugarte as the double pivot, United gain more control in central areas. Ugarte can sweep and break play, while Mainoo offers composure to recycle possession and release Fernandes higher up. Amorim will want quicker vertical passes into Šeško, with Mbeumo stretching Chelsea’s back line and Fernandes drifting into pockets.
And for god’s sake – put some crosses into our giant number 9! There were countless examples of poor or no delivery by the likes of Amad, Dorgu, Shaw and others against Manchester City. How can the young target man be expected to show what he can do with no service? Astonishingly he had no touches in the box against Manchester City – Patrick Dorgu has the most of any United player.
The shape should be also tighter out of possession – Chelsea thrive on transitions, and the midfield’s ability to cover ground is vital.

Both sides need this. United must be more clinical; Chelsea will back their midfield to control and feed Palmer. Logic says a tight game with swings in momentum.
If United’s new pivot settles early and Fernandes gets space between the lines, there’s a platform to build on. What’s certain is that we need much more quality on the ball than we showed against Manchester City to get anything out of this match.
