Bruno Fernandes capped a captain’s performance with a hat-trick as Manchester United overcame a shaky start to defeat Real Sociedad 4-1 at Old Trafford, securing their place in the Europa League quarter-finals with a 5-2 aggregate victory.
After last week’s 1-1 draw in San Sebastian, United needed a strong home performance to progress, and despite falling behind early, they responded emphatically to set up a last-eight encounter with French side Lyon.
Fantastic Fernandes Leads By Example
On a night when United needed their biggest players to step up, Bruno Fernandes reinforced his legend status with a masterclass. The Portuguese midfielder’s hattrick – including two ice-cool penalties and a clinical finish from open play – was the difference between the sides, demonstrating once again his ability to deliver when it matters most.
Manager Ruben Amorim was full of praise:
It’s hard for a player like him sometimes. He wants to win really bad and sometimes too much. It is not a bad thing but sometimes he doesn’t trust in his team-mates, but he is always there. We need to help him win titles because he deserves it.
With six goals in as many games and direct involvement in 11 of United’s last 13 goals, Fernandes continues to be the driving force behind United’s season. His third goal – a lung-busting 60-yard run from deep in his own half finished with composure – showcased his relentless energy and quality.
Zirkzee Shines While Hojlund’s Struggles Continue
Joshua Zirkzee provided further evidence of his growing confidence with an influential display, playing with flair and vision in the number 10 role. The Dutchman, who has responded impressively after a difficult start to his United career, created several chances and linked play effectively throughout.
In contrast, Rasmus Hojlund’s goal drought extended to 21 matches despite some promising build-up play. The Danish striker squandered two clear opportunities – most notably when unmarked 12 yards out, switching to his weaker right foot before screwing a shot horribly wide. His late assist for Diogo Dalot’s fourth goal provided some consolation on another frustrating night in front of goal.
“Strikers are all about goals, you will be criticised by scoring and not scoring, we want Rasmus to score as many as we can,” Fernandes said post-match. “But at the same time he is doing a lot of movements. There are a lot of things he does you sometimes cannot see but we see it – and how much he wants to score. I am sure the goals will come.”
Silverware Hopes Alive
The dismissal of Sociedad substitute Jon Aramburu just seven minutes after his introduction proved pivotal. With Patrick Dorgu released by a brilliant Zirkzee pass, Aramburu dragged back the United full-back and was shown a straight red card as the last defender – a decision the Spanish side strongly contested.
From that point, United’s progress never looked in doubt, with Fernandes completing his hat-trick before Dalot added gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time.
After Sunday’s FA Cup exit to Fulham, the Europa League represents United’s only remaining shot at silverware this season and, perhaps more importantly, their most realistic route back to the Champions League with all the financial rewards that entails.
In a week dominated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s comments that some players were “not good enough” and others “overpaid,” this was a timely reminder of what this squad can produce on their day. Casemiro, specifically challenged by Amorim to “play so much better,” responded with an assured performance in midfield, benefiting from the slower pace compared to Premier League encounters.
As United march on to face Lyon in the quarter-finals, Amorim will hope to welcome back injured players and see others follow their captain’s lead. But one thing is increasingly clear – where would United be without Bruno Fernandes?

Diogo Dalot: 7/10 – Decent on the ball and defensively last night, and added gloss to the scoreline with a nice finish
Casemiro: 7.5/10 – Instrumental in winning the penalty and provided great defensive foil to Bruno’s outstanding attacking performance. Clapped off when subbed
Bruno Fernandes: 9/10 & MOTM – His first European hattrick for United – what a player!
Dorgu: 7/10 – Full of energy and won a penalty. Finishing could do with some work but looks to be the right kind of player for Amorim moving forward
Joshua Zirkzee: 8/10 – What a performance – strong, skilful, creative. Only negative is he probably should have scored himself
Garnacho: 6.5 – Same story really; some awesome moments and did assist Bruno’s open-play goal but decision-making often lacking
Rasmus Hojlund: 6.5/10 – Won a penalty and was a real thorn in the side of the Sociedad defence. That goal remains elusive though

Looking Forward
United have a couple of relatively meaningless away games now – Leicester and Forest this weekend and next.
The bigger games are a little further on the horizon: City in the league and then the Europa League quarters against Lyon at the start of April.
Hopefully this lull, and lack of mid-week games for a few weeks gives the players and manager time to recharge, try some new stuff, and build on what was probably our best performance so far under Reuben Amorim.
