Manchester United took a big step towards automatic Europa League qualification with a tight win over a Rangers team that really should have been put away much earlier in the evening.
Ex-Red Jack Butland inadvertently put us ahead on 52 minutes after punching a corner into his own net. Rangers looked toothless until, after 88 minutes, Maguire’s missed header allowed Cyriel Dessers in for an excellent, opportune equaliser.
It wasn’t to be for the Gers though; Bruno Fernandes firing in first-time from a Lisandro Martinez cross deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic win.
Respects paid to a true legend
The evening began with a poignant tribute to United legend Denis Law, who passed away recently at 84. The Stretford End was adorned with a banner reading ‘Denis Law, The King’, as the club paid homage to one of its most beloved sons.
First half: dominance without penetration
In the opening period United had the majority the ball, but struggled to create many clear-cut chances. Garnacho and Bruno looked good down the left and Zirkzee had some nice touches, but United’s lack of a true goalscorer was on full display again; with us mainly being reduced to more speculative long-range efforts – Lisandro Martinez going close with a screamer.
Rangers had some isolated efforts on the counter and from corners, but stand-in keeper Bayindir dealt with them well and it was mostly United on the attack.
A disallowed headed goal for Matthijs de Ligt, after a soft foul from a corner, was frustrating, and was the closest we got to a breakthrough.
The first half ended 0-0, with neither team able to gain an advantage.
Second Half: Average Performance. Late drama
The second half sprung to life early on, as United took the lead in the 52nd minute. Christian Eriksen’s corner was bizarrely punched into his own net by Rangers keeper and ex-Red Jack Butland, gifting the home side the opening goal.
United had a number of opportunities to extend their lead. In the 60th minute, Alejandro Garnacho found himself in a great after Amad had played an excellent ball across the goal, but he took too long to get his shot away and struck the post with his effort.
We could have made it 2-0 again soon after when Christian Eriksen whipped in a dangerous free kick from the flank. Harry Maguire met the cross with a free header, but somehow turned the ball wide, letting the Scot off the hook.
The game began to slow down a bit, but Rangers almost equalized in the 74th minute when Jefte received the ball outside the box and unleashed a volley, only to see it comfortably saved by Altay Bayindir in the United goal.
15 minutes later, with the game looking like it was drawing to a close, all broke loose. Harry Maguire missed a big header and allowed Cyriel Dessers in to finish stylishly. The numerous Rangers fans in the home end erupted, and it looked like United had thrown it all away. But captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up deep into stoppage time to smash home a Martinez cross and send the Scots packing.

Altay Bayindir (7/10): Solid debut in European competition. Made crucial saves and showed composure under pressure.
Leny Yoro (6/10): First European start, solid enough.
Matthijs de Ligt (6/10): Mixed performance highlighted by a controversial disallowed goal, hooked at half time.
Lisandro Martinez (8/10): A commanding defensive performance crowned by providing the crucial assist for the winning goal.
Diogo Dalot (6/10): Kept going but didn’t much higher up the pitch. Switched into back 3 after Yoro’s substituion..
Toby Collyer (6.5/10): A bit shaky at first but generally an impressive first start under Amorim. Demonstrated maturity beyond his years.
Christian Eriksen (6.5/10): Provided the corner that led to the own goal and was involved in several key build-ups.
Bruno Fernandes (8/10 & MOTM): Creative, busy and dangerous – a classis Bruno performance capped off with the winning goal.
Amad Diallo (7/10): Back in the advanced wing-back role effectively. Looked lively and consistently challenged theRangers’ defence.
Alejandro Garnacho (7.5/10): Brought energy and threat from the left flank. Created numerous opportunities.
Joshua Zirkzee (6/10): Worked hard and provided team support, without providing a real threat.

Harry Maguire (5/10): Replaced De Ligt at half-time. Came on and nearly scored, but was culpable for the equaliser..
Tyrell Malacia (5/10): Replaced Yoro in the 55th minute. Provided defensive cover.
Manuel Ugarte (6/10): Came on for Collyer in the 73rd minute. Added energy to the midfield.
Kobbie Mainoo (6/10): Replaced Eriksen in the 73rd minute. Helped control the midfield in the closing stages.
Rasmus Hojlund (5/10): Replaced Zirkzee in the 82nd minute. Limited time to make an impact.
Crowd Trouble Overshadows Match
The match was unfortunately preceded by significant crowd disorder. Greater Manchester Police reported 39 arrests for various offences, including violent disorder, drug offences, and inappropriate chanting. About 4,000 Rangers fans arrived in Manchester, with over 450 police officers deployed to manage the situation.
There was also a significant Rangers presence in the United sections of the stadium, with hundreds if not thousands seen celebrating the equaliser and in some cases goading and intimidating home fans.
Manchester United issued a statement emphasising that they had taken “the strictest possible measures” to prevent away fans from obtaining tickets in home sections, promising to investigate and sanction any breaches.
Looking Ahead
The victory leaves United fourth in the group and on the brink of qualifying for the Europa League’s last 16. We will look to confirm their progression when we travel to Romania to face FCSB next week, but before that we travel to Craven Cottage for another important league game at Fulham this Sunday.
