Last weekend Old Trafford felt like it had some wind in its sails on the back of the Liverpool result. Now United travel to the City Ground with a chance to make it four league wins on the spin.
Sean Dyche’s Forest are low on confidence but dangerous in their moments and have beaten United in the last three home league outings. This is one of those fixtures that looks straightforward on paper but rarely is.
United arrive in better shape than at any point since the summer. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have given the attack a cutting edge, Casemiro has stabilised the midfield, and the back three look sharper when De Ligt is commanding. Forest, by contrast, have been grinding through results under a new boss and defensive reset; they will set up to frustrate and hit us on the break.
For Amorim this is a test of whether recent form is a pattern or a flash.
Manchester United – Team news
Lisandro Martínez is back in first-team training but is not expected to be available yet. Harry Maguire missed the Brighton game with a knock and is a late fitness check; if passed fit he should slot straight back into the back three. Leny Yoro is pushing for minutes but may be held for a bench option. Amorim’s preferred midfield -Casemiro and Bruno – look to be settled, and Amad and Dalot (or Dorgu) provide width depending on whether Amorim wants more defensive solidity or quick outlets on the flanks.
Possible XI (3-4-2-1):
Lammens;
Yoro, Maguire, Shaw;
Amad, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dalot;
Mbeumo, Šeško, Cunha.
Nottingham Forest – Team news
Sean Dyche still lacks options up front with Chris Wood and Angus Gunn sidelined; Igor Jesus is likely to lead the line again. Zinchenko and Ola Aina remain out, which limits width, and Dyche has shown a willingness to change shape; expect a more direct, compact Forest than the one who asked questions in open play earlier in the season.
Forest will look to frustrate, make the pitch narrow, and exploit set-piece and counter opportunities. The crowd will be raucous and Dyche will demand intensity and battling for every 50/50.
Flash in the pan or turning a corner?
The Liverpool result was not an accident; it was a corrective. The question now is whether United can turn a feel-good run into a baseline. Momentum in football is fragile: it requires repetition of the right habits, not just one-off performances. If United keep the same discipline in midfield and the full-backs balance attack with cover, the psychological edge gained from recent wins will count for a lot.
This fixture is as much about temperament as tactics. Forest will make it a fight; United must be willing to do the ugly bits as well as the bright ones.
Form guide (last five, all comps)
Manchester United: W W W L W
Nottingham Forest: L W L L L
United’s attack is finding rhythm; Forest’s issues in the final third persist. Recent fixtures suggest United have the edge in both confidence and cohesion.
A win cements United’s rise up the table and keeps pressure on those above. For Forest it is about stopping a slide and giving Dyche something tangible at the City Ground to build from.
On balance, the fixture feels bigger for United – not because Forest are free of danger, but because consistency is the currency Amorim is being judged on.
Prediction
This is United’s game to lose, but it would be naïve to underestimate a dangerous Nottingham Forest, who already look like they will have to scrap for every single point if they’re to stay in the Premier League.
Forest will make it physically demanding, and they hold a threat on set-pieces and counters. United have more attacking variety and, importantly, are beginning to look like a team that can see out tight moments.
Prediction: Nottingham Forest 1–3 Manchester United.
