Manchester United played terribly as they lost 3-1 to give Unai Emery his first win as Aston Villa manager.
Erik Ten Hag’s side started awfully as Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne scored to give the hosts a 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes.
United got one back through a Jacob Ramsey own-goal from Luke Shaw’s shot before half time.
But after the break we started exactly how we did in the first half as Ramsey made up for his errors with a completely unmarked finish to give Villa a 3-1 win.
Terrible start
United got off to the worst start possible with Villa getting two goals in the first ten minutes through Bailey and Digne.
For most of the first half we never looked at the races, Villa were well and truly up for it in Emery’s first game in charge.
The defending for the first goal was lacklustre and awful, and then Digne compounding things with a great strike from an edge of the box free kick.
United looked to get things back in their favour after the poor start and for the last fifteen minutes we looked sharper and were creating chances.
A goal towards to end of the first half from Luke Shaw gave United fans hope heading into half-time.
Shaw’s shot was speculative at best from the edge of the box and took a big deflection off Jacob Ramsey leaving Emiliano Martinez no chance to save the ball.
Forward line poor
The attackers did not look in this game at all. United had eight shots only three on target.
Ronaldo looked anonymous, Rashford never plays well on the right and didn’t again today. Donny van de Beek played okay but wasn’t that effective. The only one who looked to try and make things happen was Garnacho.
It was so surprising that changes weren’t made earlier. It was screaming out for someone to come on and switch things up. Martial should’ve come on earlier if he was fit enough to be on the bench.
It shows the state of this squad that with a few injuries to key players things can get this bad. Sancho and Antony were out through injury and Fernandes was missing due to suspension, it really showed.
And when those changes were made, we never got the ball to the right players. With Ronaldo staying on it pushed Rashford and Martial wide and they couldn’t influence the game at all. This game showed how desperately Ten Hag needs a striker.
A poor result for United as it looked like we were turning things around. Hopefully they can pick themselves up and get back at this same Villa team on Thursday night in the League Cup.
