There has much speculation this week that Manchester United Women’s star striker Alessia Russo is to be linked with a move away from the club. Reports suggested that the current Champions League winners Lyon are possibly launching a bid in either January or waiting until the end of the season when they can sign her as a free agent.
A Prolific Forward for United and England
Russo has become one of the most prolific forwards in the last twelve months. She played a pivotal part for United last season scoring eleven goals and then for England at the Euros where she scored the goal of the tournament.
Her long term future with the Reds is up in the air as she enters the final year of her contract. Russo has reassured she is not looking to initiate a move away and remains happy at the club. However, concern was raised when she rejected United’s offer of a new contract before Euro 2022. Since then, both sides have failed in coming to an agreement to extend her stay at the club.
Fan favourite
Russo is a fan favourite. As more interest is being shown in her by other clubs, manager Marc Skinner responded emphatically.
“One thing: we’re not a selling club. As a club we choose to make decisions on who we sell if we need to at any point. Just look at our [transfer] window just gone, that doesn’t look like a selling club to me. It looks like a club that is actually bringing seven players in, so it’s definitely not a selling club.”

Skinner was adamant that he wants to keep Russo but also pointed out that negotiating contracts can take a little time.
“Alessia is absolutely happy with what she’s doing. If we weren’t happy with Alessia, she wouldn’t be considered for teams or playing. She’s a great person who is really, really professional, a great player and someone we want to look at.”

Russo has not featured for United since the international break back in September with a minor injury. She has now recovered taking part in training and made an appearance as a substitute in a 3-0 victory over Everton in the Women’s Super League.
