Scott McTominay scored an extremely late winner at Old Trafford as Manchester United beat Omonoia 1-0 in the Europa League.
The Red Devils looked sharp throughout coming close to scoring multiple times through both Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo.
But tough defending from the Cypriot side kept Erik Ten Hag’s team out until a stoppage time winner.
Not clinIcal
It was a story of missed opportunities for United as it looked to be an embarrassing night in Europe.
Ten Hag’s side had 34 shots, 13 of those were on target. 78% possession. But only 1-0! Those kinds of stats should not be happening.
Rashford came close a number of times with 10 shots on goal and five of those on target, any other day at least one of those finds its way into the back of the net.
Put simply United should have had this game dead and buried long before the full time whistle went.
Rugged opposition
To their credit Neil Lennon’s side made a difficult game of it in the end. Most people went into this game thinking that United would walk away with a comfortable win and continue on the momentum they had began to build.
But Omonioa’s defence rarely looked shaken.
Francis Uzoho had an outstanding performance. The goalkeeper had the most touches of any opposition player, won all of his duels and made 12 saves throughout the match.
Job Done – Just
This will never go down as one of the greatest nights ever seen at Old Trafford, certainly not from the home side that is.
But ultimately football is a results business and although it didn’t look certain United got the job done in the end.
Jadon Sancho worked well when he came of the bench to put the ball in the right area. And then Scott McTominay popped up with the all important goal.
One touch to set himself before he released a powerfully driven shot into the back of the net.
United now sit three points off Group E leaders Real Sociedad with a clash against the Spanish side still to come at Old Trafford.
Before that a tough run of Premier League fixtures awaits Erik Ten Hag including the likes of Newcastle United, Tottenham and Chelsea.
