Manchester United fans will stage another protest this Saturday, April 16th. Organised by a fan group calling themselves ‘The 1958’, the protest takes aim at much derided club owners, the Glazer family.
A Twitter statement explained that the protesters will meet at The Tollgate pub between 11am and 2pm, before marching to the stadium together. Then the group will boycott the first 17 minutes of the game – a minute for every year the Glazers have been in charge.
The statement reminds fans: “let’s face it, you won’t miss much action anyway”.
Despite the relatively little-known status of The 1958 the protest has garnered plenty of attention, including coverage from national newspapers, The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Mirror. However the reaction among Manchester United fans not affiliated with The 1958 has been mixed.
There’s some forceful rhetoric in the statement too, with the group claiming this protest is the start of a new movement, rather than a one-off event, as the well-documented 2021 protest was.
The group added: “This isn’t another Liverpool; we believe this was a one-off unique event. This is the start of constant, relentless, peaceful and legal protests and actions against our owners.
“Bring your colours, banners, flags and flares. We need you, we need each other, we need everyone to put aside their differences. Some things are worth fighting for.”
The consensus in the Stretford Paddock team, among writers and presenters, seems to have been that any protest against the Glazers is good, but doubts remain over how well attended and impactful this protest will be.
