Luton Town F.C vs United: The Preview

For anyone that enjoys the carnage of FA Cup away days against smaller clubs, prepare for a throwback in the League tomorrow.

Kenilworth Road is not your average away stadium. We’ve all seen the memes about the stadium being inside a house, but Luton Town is a small, tight ground which will have have 2 things you won’t find at some bigger places like the Etihad – a packed stadium and a hostile atmosphere.

United have won their last 3 away games on the bounce, and are undefeated in 2024. Last match saw United pip top 4 contenders Aston Villa 2-1 thanks to heroics from Scott McTominay. Luton will be looking to right some wrongs after enduring a miserable battering from fellow relegation contender Sheffield United at home.

Luton are currently dangling above the relegation zone at 17^th where a win would see them go above Notts Forest at 16^th. Every point to them will be a matter of championship and safety so United can expect a team with a solid siege mentality waiting for them. A win for United helps them in their campaign for salvaging their season and close the 5-point gap between themselves and Villa.

According to Erik ten Hag, the only 50-50 return is Luke Shaw, who was substituted at half-time against Villa as a precaution. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia are still a couple of weeks from joining first team training. Lisandro Martinez is a long-term absentee alongside alleged United striker Anthony Martial.

The man of the hour is Rasmus Hojlund, who is currently on a hot streak of form, scoring 5 goals in 5 League games in a row. Andre Onana had a quality showing against Villa and every United fan prays that it was just a glimpse into how good Onana actually is. Harry Maguire is expected to retain his position at Central Defence while Martinez recovers. “Mr. Consistent” Diogo Dalot is expected to start at Right Back however, he could be deployed on the left if Luke Shaw does not recover in time.

The Hatters are in a bit of patchy form, having thrashed Brighton 4-0, dramatically drawing 4-4 against Newcastle and losing against Sheffield United 3-1. The Hatters under Rob Edwards are facing the dangers of relegation but show the grit expected from a cornered tiger – fierce and unwavering. Kenilworth Road is not the happy hunting ground for big teams to just collect 3 points and go home, just ask Liverpool, who they held to a 1-1 draw. Luton will be relishing the chance to make a statement and keeping all 3 points at Kenilworth.

Prediction

United can expect to face a low block so the attackers will have their work cut out for them. The defenders will undoubtedly need to be wary of the pace of the likes of Chong, Adebayor and Barkley on the counter-attack and will need to snuff out long balls into the channels.

If all goes to plan United should be able to win if they play to their strengths and not just hand over possession to Luton to get countered. Luton do have a tendency to drop off in intensity as games progress as evidenced by their many draws despite scoring first.

United will need to battle through the initial intensity and be wary of their aerial threats. The passing will need to be sharp and United will need to take every chance they get through the low block as if it is their last (based on current patterns, it just might be!) The players have to stick together and bring home all 3 points. No excuses!

Every game must be played with the seriousness of a cup final and United cannot afford to drop any more points with our ambitions of making top 4 and trying to salvage this season. Expect a proper game of Barclays.
